 | | Come see where America began — Virginia’s Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Colonial Williamsburg, the seat of power of England's largest and most prosperous colony, was capital of Virginia from 1699 to 1780. Visit Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the “New World,” established in 1607. 2007 will mark the 400th anniversary of our nation’s birthplace and an 18-month slate of events, beginning in fall 2006 and continuing through spring 2008, will commemorate this milestone in our nation’s history. The Chesapeake Bay region also is home to Norfolk and Newport News, a city of 171,000, situated on the front of the James River. Virginia Beach was developed as a holiday retreat, and we see more student groups combing a brief stop on the beach with their Williamsburg educational tour. |
