Educational Impact: Ashlyn Farmer, 1st Place Winner of Georgia 4H’s Northwest Project Achievement
At Son Tours, nothing makes us prouder than seeing the positive impact that our trips have on our students and their educational experience. Hearing stories of our students thriving and achieving academically is what makes our work at Son Tours so worthwhile. One of our recent educational student travel trips inspired middle school student, Ashlyn Farmer, to do her Georgia 4-H project presentation on what she learned on her trip with Son Tours.
We are so proud to announce that Ashlyn won first place out of 300 other students in the Northwest district, for her Georgia 4-H Project Achievement Presentation at Georgia Highlands College on January 22, 2022.
The trip that inspired Ashlyn’s presentation was Model Middle School’s three-day trip to Philadelphia with Son Tours this past November. With a full itinerary of adventures from the Franklin Institute Science Museum to Chocolate World in Hershey Park, our Philadelphia-Hershey educational tours offer a unique, dual-purpose experience – a combination of meaningful, historical sites throughout the birthplace of freedom coupled with a fun-filled visit to a nearby theme park that’s brimming with its own “sweet” history.
But it wasn’t the Philly cheesesteaks or seeing Liberty Bell and Independence Hall that resonated most with Ashlyn, it was visiting a group of people who live a very different lifestyle than her – The Amish. Ashlyn and her fellow students got the opportunity to immerse themselves in Lancaster County’s Amish community by spending a whole day amongst the Amish people, learning about their lifestyle, their family values, religion, language and so much more.
The group’s Son Tours guide taught the students all about why this special group of people choose to livea lifestyle similar to that of those who lived during the birth of our country long ago. Not only did the students get to walk through the farmland and village to see the shops where the Amish people make and sell all of their own goods, but they even got the opportunity to have dinner at the home of one of the Amish families.
Ashlyn loved her trip to Amish Country so much, that she decided to do her district 4-H project on the Amish’s way of life and what she learned during her day with the Amish community. She even used some of the handmade Amish goods she bought from the shops as props for her presentation. She believed it was important that more people, especially other students her age, to learn about the Amish people. When asked what impacted her the most about the Amish people, Ashlyn said, “I thought it was so amazing how their whole lives don’t revolve around technology like ours do. The Amish people feel called by God to live this different lifestyle and that was so interesting to me.”
We are so excited and proud to congratulate Ashlyn on her amazing first place accomplishment. At Son Tours, it is our goal to give students the best experience possible and the opportunity to grow and learn outside of the classroom. Ashlyn is eager to go on another Son Tours trip with her school next fall. This time they are headed to the Big Apple on a student travel tour to New York City.
